Does 1080 mean 1920 × 1080?
A 16:9 source becomes 1920 × 1080. Portrait and other aspect ratios have a different width while retaining a 1080-pixel height. Upscaling does not restore missing source detail.
Use the 1080p preset to produce video 1080 pixels high. Width follows the source aspect ratio.

Limit: The preset preserves aspect ratio. Portrait video has a different width; enlargement adds pixels, not recovered camera detail.
